70th Dubrovnik Summer Festival

Dubrovnik Summer Festival was founded way back in 1950 when many theater and music events where established all over the Europe. Dubrovnik Summer Festival was started by artist and cultural workers from Dubrovnik and Croatia in attention to bring cultural events on Dubrovnik historical and natural ambient inspired by other similar festivals in Europe.
Through years Dubrovnik Summer Festival becomes one of the most prestigious European festivals and since 1956 is member of European Festivals Association.

This year Dubrovnik Summer Festival is celebrating big 70th anniversary. Traditionality, Festival will be held between 10 of July and 25 of August. In 47 festival days one of the most prestigious European festivals will present more than 80 theatre, ballet, movie, folklore and other shows at more than 20 ambient locations in Dubrovnik. This year Festival concept is based on theme Myths of the City.

Program of Dubrovnik Summer Festival is gathering the best Croatian and international artist. High quality production is the fundament of program that is nurturing the tradition and historical identity of Festival built through years.

The opening ceremony of seventieth Dubrovnik Summer Festival will be held at Wednesday 10th of July 2019 in front of Saint Blaise. Scenario for opening is written by the head of Festival Dora Ruždjak Podolski and her assistant Saša Božić. On the opening event will perform Hannover’s State Opera Orchestra, one of the best opera orchestra in Europe, Ivan Goran Kovačić Academic Choir with conductor Ivan Repušić and Festival Drama Ensemble.

The first premiere this year will be one of the most famous tragedies of the great William Shakespeare, “Hamlet” directed by Paolo Magelli, that will be performed by Festival Drama Ensemble in Lovrjenac from 27th to 31st July.

The festival’s audience will also be able to watch the selection from Ranko Marinković’s “Under the Balconies” directed by Darija Harjaček. The last year winner of Orlando for the best art achievement, actress Nataša Kopeč is playing Oliva in this play, located in park of University Campus in Dubrovnik.

The 70th Dubrovnik Summer Festival Drama program includes performances of the best recent Croatian drama performances, so the audience will enjoy the play „Tko pjeva zlo ne misli“ in park Gradac. Play is directed by Rene Medvešek and performed by HNK Zagreb.

For ballet lovers there is ballet “Four Seasons” in the choreography of Ilija Živoja with music by Max Richter performed by one of the world’s best ballets, Russian Marian Theater.
The exclusive dance program is show “A Love Supreme” created on the music of John Coltrane. Choreography is signed by the famous Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Salva Sanchis and is produced by one of the most prestigious European ensembles, the Belgian Rosas.

The music program of the Festival is bringing great names and excellent programs. Music program of the Festival will be open 11th of July with big Gala Concert of Hannover’s State Opera Orchestra with Ivan Goran Kovačić Academic Choir, Ivan Repušić as Conductor, Evelin Novak soprano, Khatuna Mikaberidze mezzo-soprano, Tomislav Mužek tenor, Daniel Eggert bas-baritone.
During the festival will be held numerous concerts of internationally famous and awarded musicians. Traditionally, part of the festival will be dedicated to performances Folklore Ansamble Lado. In cooperation with Pula Film Festival and Motovin Film Festival audience will be able to see great movies, and many additional programs.

This festival is nurturing site-specific program that puts shows on the different sites all over the town, combining heritage and tradition with modern art.
This year festival locations are: Art School Park, Bokar Fort, Bunić-Kaboga Summer Villa, Gradac Park, In front of Cathedral, In front of St. Blaise’s Church, Lazareti, Lovrjenac Fort, Rector’s Palace Atrium, Revelin Fort Terrace, Sponza Palace Atrium, University of Dubrovnik Campus Park.
