Advent is a festive season in Dubrovnik, with holiday decorations lighting up the city and ushering in the Christmas and New Year’s festivities with a series of special events and programs. While it is not as popular a wintertime destination as Zagreb, Dubrovnik is nevertheless one of Croatia’s most magical settings for Christmas celebrations, with the commanding, UNESCO-protected historic buildings and fortifications twinkling with thousands of lights, medieval archways decorated with laurel wreaths, and a warm, joyous atmosphere taking over the city.
Christmas lights will mark the beginning of Advent in the City, a highlight of the popular Dubrovnik Winter Festival, which kicks off with the lighting of the first Advent candle. This year’s Dubrovnik Winter Festival starts on December 1 and the holiday lights will illuminate the Pile Gate, Onofrio’s Fountain, the Dubrovnik Lazzarettos and the city’s other landmarks throughout the first week of January.
The Dubrovnik Christmas market will once again be set up on Stradun, the main street in the Old Town, where countless craftsmen will display their handicrafts, Christmas decorations, toys, candles, ceramics, embroidery and porcelain, and visitors will get a chance to taste traditional Dubrovnik Christmas cakes and sweets, including the popular roasted candied almonds and orange peels, as well as sausages, seafood and other unique local delicacies.
The Advent season will bring a rich offering of culinary feasts, performances of popular Croatian singers and bands, and various cultural and entertainment events, including the singing of traditional local holiday carols, the Dubrovnik kolenda, on Christmas Eve, live music in front of the Church of St. Blaise, traditional klapa singing, a skating rink and a Christmas Tale show for children. Visitors will have the chance to warm up over a glass of mulled wine, learn how to make traditional Christmas sweets, dance in the streets, and enjoy the delicious food at the holiday stands and cottages lined along Stradun. The traditional Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert will be held on December 22 and the annual Cake Party will bring a versatile offering of delicious cakes to Luža Square, with all proceeds from the sales going to charity.
Advent in the City and the Dubrovnik Winter Festival are organized by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, the City of Dubrovnik, and a number of local cultural institutions and public companies. The main events will be held at multiple locations in the city’s historic centre.
