Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century when Croatian tribes in attempt to hide from the barbarians formed a few settlements. By the time small settlements marge together forming a single city surrounded by today famous ramparts.

Dubrovnik expanded its territory from Klek in the north to Sutorina at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, including the islands of Mljet, Lastovo, Elaphites and Lokrum.
From 1358, when liberating from Venetian rule until 1808 when annexed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, Dubrovnik was aristocratic maritime republic, that reached its commercial peak in 15th and the 16th. The Dubrovnik Republic was it its golden age in 16th century. Its prosperity was based on maritime trade, the Dubrovnik merchant navy matched world levels with its quality fleet of 180 to 200 ships.
In time of the Republic, Dubrovnik reached a lot of achievements in fields of architectural and urban development, literature and poetry, science, art and culture. Most of that is preserved till present day.
In 17th century a few unfortunate events hit Dubrovnik. Crisis in Mediterranean maritime affairs affected Dubrovnik too, and the catastrophic earthquake hit Dubrovnik in 1667. Napoleon dissolved the Dubrovnik Republic in 1808.
In 1815, Dubrovnik region was joined to other parts of Dalmatia and Croatia, and they were part of the same county ever since.
The Dubrovnik was attacked in the most recent European war, Croatian war for independence in 1991. The Dubrovnik region was occupied and significantly devastated by Serbian and Montenegrin army. With help of UNESCO organization, Dubrovnik cultural heritage has been repaired for the most part.
