The Dubrovnik Cable Car offers the most spectacular panoramic view of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area and is the second most popular tourist activity in the old city, after the tour of the city walls. The cable car takes visitors on a 778 meter journey to the top of Mount Srđ, a low mountain overlooking the walled city, which offers the best vantage points for taking photographs of Dubrovnik, the island of Lokrum and numerous attractions in the city’s historic core, including the Dubrovnik fortresses, the old port and Stradun, the main street in the Old Town.
Mount Srđ is 412 meters high and was once covered with an oak forest which locals called dubrava and after which Dubrovnik was named. The word is derived from the old Slavic dub, which means “oak tree.” Fort Imperial, a fortress built from 1806 to 1816, during the Napoleonic Wars, sits at the top of the mountain and offers the best vistas of the entire region, from the Elaphiti Islands in the northwest all the way to Montenegro in the southeast. The fortress also hosts a museum commemorating the Siege of Dubrovnik during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. Srđ was the site of some of the fiercest battles fought during the war and lost most of its thick pine forest, which had previously covered its southern slope.
The Dubrovnik Cable Car takes visitors from the lower station to the top of Mount Srđ in just three minutes. The lower station is located on King Petar Krešimir Street, just north of the Dubrovnik city walls and opposite the fire station. The upper station has two large panoramic terraces, a restaurant, snack bar and souvenir shop.
The cable car timetable changes from month to month, depending on demand. In the peak months of June, July and August, the operating hours are from 9 am to midnight and slightly shorter in May (9 am – 9 pm) and September (9 am – 10 pm). In April and October, the cable car runs from 9 am to 8 pm and in February, March and November from 9 am to 5 pm. In January and December, it is open from 9 am to 4 pm. It is closed for safety reasons whenever the wind is too strong or if there is lightning. Tickets are available at the cable car stations.
