New Year’s Eve is an excellent time to visit Dubrovnik. The warm, joyous atmosphere during the Advent season and in the days leading to New Year’s festivities is a special experience and one not easily forgotten. Dubrovnik’s streets, squares, churches, parks, palaces and tower bells are decorated with thousands of festive lights and the Old Town becomes an open stage, hosting numerous concerts, theatre and dance performances that entertain visitors throughout the long winter holiday season.
Stradun, the main street in the Old Town, is a traditional gathering place for New Year’s celebration, bringing together thousands of people for several evenings of music, dance, excellent food and wine, and a fabulous display of fireworks over the Dubrovnik city walls.
This year, the New Year’s program kicks off on December 29 at 9 pm with a concert by the Gypsy Kings on Stradun. On December 30, the Croatian rock band Opća opasnost performs in front of the Church of St. Blaise at 9 pm. The traditional Children’s New Year’s Eve party begins at 10:30 am on December 31 with a performance by the young singer Mia Negovetić & Super Cover Band. At noon, locals and visitors can enjoy the sounds of the traditional Dubrovnik Christmas carols performed by the Linđo Foklore Ensemble, the Libertas Choir and the Dubrovnik Brass Band. In the evening, popular Croatian singers Nina Badrić and Toni Cetinski will entertain the crowds on Stradun before the big countdown and fireworks at midnight.
The festivities continue on New Year’s Day with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra performing a series of famous arias and waltzes on Stradun at noon. Visitors can enjoy oysters and sparkling wine while listening to the concert. In the evening, they can come back for another treat, as the party continues with Klapa Rišpet performing traditional Croatian a cappella songs.
All those arriving to Dubrovnik for the first time can go on a free guided tour of the city every Saturday at 10 pm. The tour, which begins at Pile Gate, is available throughout December and January.
